Utilizing Oblique Aerial Imagery for Property Assessment

Presented by Dean Larson, Wisconsin District Manager Pictometry Intl. Corp.

Class Summary

Presentation at the 2008 NCRAAO Conference

Recent advances in technology have brought a new paradigm in how we can view the world through imagery.  Geo-referenced oblique aerial imagery opens the door to many new uses in Property Assessment, which were not possible in the past with traditional “straight-down” orthogonal imagery.

Oblique imagery (imagery captured from an angle) allows you to view the sides of houses, buildings, etc., and view the world in a format that can be easier for the average user to interpret.  Oblique imagery also contains a significant amount of data that can be very valuable in Property Assessment, specifically allowing you to see more than just the front yard or the roof of a property.  You can also take measurements of properties right from the oblique imagery, allowing you to get valuable data on properties without leaving your office.

This presentation will include an introduction to oblique aerial imagery and will focus on real world, everyday uses for the imagery for Assessors and Appraisers.  Much of this discussion will involve “live” examples of oblique imagery and a discussion about how this technology can be integrated with CAMA software to create a powerful mass appraisal system.
